ICE Out for Good

Despite thousands of protests across the country --- including here at the Beach --- following the killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis, the Trump administration is doubling down, offering a false narrative, blocking investigations, and continuing its aggressive enforcement efforts aimed at immigrants and their supporters.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been at least 16 shooting incidents by federal immigration officials resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries. Good is just the latest casualty. Additionally, 32 people died in ICE custody last year, matching a record set in 2024.
FL Senator Ashley Moody, who faces voters this year, responded to the Minnesota killing by renewing her push for a nationwide Halo Law, modeled on state legislation, to protect ICE and other federal agents. Meanwhile, FL Governor Ron DeSantis is touting the state's success in partnering with ICE, as the legislature prepares to consider additional bills targeting immigrants in the upcoming session. In fact, Florida has adopted some of the nation's most aggressive anti-immigrant laws.
This is an outrage! Silence is consent. Speak out, take action and push back this week:
✊Contact Rep. John Rutherford and Senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody and demand a full investigation of the killing of Renee Good and the indiscriminate use of deadly force against protesters by ICE agents. Tell them to stop funding ICE. You can reach them through the Capitol switchboard (202-224-3121) or 5 Calls. Extra credit: Tell Moody to protect immigrants and protesters, not just ICE agents!
✊Urge FL Rep. Kiyan Michael and Senator Clay Yarborough to end all collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE by repealing the Federal Immigration Enforcement legislation enacted in 2019. Click on their names for contact info and follow up by signing this petition from Change.org.
✊Support the nationwide candlelight vigil honoring Renee Good and all others who have died in ICE custody or have been brutalized by ICE, and show solidarity with others fighting against the fascism gripping our country by placing a flameless candle in your window at night. Encourage others to do so as well.
✊Join the Neptune Beach Coalition, 50501 NEF, and BAM on Saturday, January 17, from 10 am to 11:30 am in front of the Beaches Library as we demonstrate against the occupation of our cities by ICE and the military actions in Venezuela. Find info and RSVP here.
✊Mark your calendars! Join the Jacksonville Immigrant Rights Alliance and other activists for Unite Against Trump: One Year of Resistance on Saturday, January 24, at noon at the Duval County Courthouse to demand ICE Out of Jacksonville, oppose the cruelty camps, and support an end to the JSO's agreement with ICE.

More than 150 people filled the street in front of the Beaches Library last Saturday to protest the senseless killing of Renee Good by ICE in Minnesota. Thanks to everyone who turned out and to all the passerbys for the overwhelmingly positive support and honks! The Neptune Beach Coalition demonstrates every Saturday from 10 am to 11:30 am! Join us again next weekend and bring a donation of toiletries for Mission House!
Pass the War Powers Act!

In a rare act of bipartisan defiance, five Senate Republicans --- sadly, none from Florida --- stood up to Trump last week and voted to advance the War Powers Resolution, a critical step in stopping the illegal war in Venezuela.
We need to flood the congressional switchboards this week and urge the Senate to pass the resolution, which will require Congress to approve any further use of military force in Venezuela. Trump has made it clear --- this is about oil, not improving the lives of Venezuelans who continue to live under a repressive dictatorship.
✊Call Senators Ashley Moody and Rick Scott and tell them to get a backbone and do their jobs next week by voting to pass the War Powers Resolution. This Capital switchboard number will reach them both: 202-224-3121.
✊Sign this petition urging Congress to pass a War Powers Resolution to stop Trump's war on Venezuela.
Standing Up for Ukraine

BAM members were among the 200+ protesters who rallied last Saturday in support of Ukraine at the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine. The gathering featured inspiring speakers who honored the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people, a march to the bridge, and resounding opposition to the actions of Trump, aka Putin's puppet.
March with NEF Indivisibles in MLK Day Parade

March with BAM and the Indivisible groups of Northeast Florida as we stand in solidarity for Civil Rights and Racial Justice, as advocated by Martin Luther King Jr. in the 45th Annual MLK Day parade on Monday, January 19th, 11 am - 1 pm. Email us if you want to carpool.
Taking Action: Schools of Nope

Katie Hathaway, regional organizer for Families for Strong Public Schools, provided an informative presentation on Schools of Hope (Schools of Nope!) legislation at last week's BAM meeting. She described the imminent threat of amendments, tucked into the state budget in 2025, which allow charter schools to co-locate with public schools at taxpayer expense. Although the Duval County School Board recently rejected several letters of intent, she warned that no district is safe as long as the law remains on the books. BAM members took action, completing more than 300 postcards to state legislators, urging them to repeal the legislation. Find out more about Schools of Nope and how you can take action here. The 2026 Legislative session opens tomorrow, Tuesday, January 13th.
Community Education Forum on Fake Clinics

Join the Youth Action Fund, Reclaim Choice, and Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, January 13th for an in-depth presentation on crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) and the role they play in Florida. The forum will cover key bills lawmakers will debate this legislative session and provide details on advocacy opportunities. There will also be a Q&A with leading voices in reproductive rights and access to reproductive health care. The forum will be held at Neptune House, 510 Florida Blvd., Neptune Beach from 6:30 - 8 pm. RSVP here.
