Stop the War: It's Illegal, Unconstitutional & Criminal

Congress will vote this week on a War Powers Resolution (H Cong Res 38/SJ Res 59) directing the President to remove the U.S. Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities against Iran. The vote is in response to reckless, illegal, and unconstitutional action taken this weekend by the Trump administration, aided by Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, based on false and unproven claims. To date, retaliatory attacks have claimed the lives of three U.S. service members and critically injured five more. Iranians, long victimized by an oppressive and violent regime, are reeling from the aftermath of the bombing, which reportedly included the killing of school children, with no apparent strategy in place to support meaningful regime change. The bombing comes amid growing attention to the Epstein scandal, Trump's sinking poll numbers, and looming mid-term elections.
This attack was undertaken without a declaration of war, without congressional authorization, and without the consent of the American people. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution is clear: the power to declare war belongs to Congress, not the President. The time for Congress to draw the line on this war-mongering chief executive is long overdue. Job one for each of us this week is to be full-throated in our opposition to the military attack on Iran and demand Congress finally do its job and pass the War Powers Resolution:
Call Rep. John Rutherford, Sens. Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, and demand they immediately invoke the War Powers Act and vote to defund any unauthorized military action against Iran that Congress has not approved. No war without congressional approval! Reach them through the Capitol switchboard (202.224.3121).
Follow up with this letter demanding a YES vote on the resolutions. Stop the war now!
Join us next Saturday at 10 am at the Beaches Library as we protest against the war, and everything else Trump and his MAGA adherents are doing to destroy this country.
FL Legislature Moves to Suppress Voting, Protests
Two dangerous bills --- creating barriers to voting and giving the state power to designate "domestic terrorist organizations" --- are moving toward final approval by the state Legislature during the final weeks of the session. Speak out this week before they become Florida law.
➡️ HB 991/SB1334, Florida's version of the proposed federal SAVE America Act, passed the House last week and now awaits a final vote in the Senate. This bill would remove thousands of eligible U.S. citizens from the voter rolls and prevent eligible U.S. citizens, who don't have a driver's license or state ID, birth certificate, or passport to prove their citizenship, from registering to vote. It could also create additional paperwork requirements for women who have changed their names through marriage or divorce.
Tell FL Sen Clay Yarborough to oppose SB 1334. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in Florida, and the consequences for doing so are harsh. This bill is about making voting harder for Floridians and thus harder for us to hold elected officials accountable. Reach him at (850) 487-5004 or use this Progress Florida action form to send a letter.
➡️HB 1471/SB 1632, the Systems of Law and Terrorist Organizations, aka Outlawing Activism bill, has passed all committees in the House and Senate and is on the House floor for a vote tomorrow (Tuesday, March 3). This bill creates a vague, new designation of “domestic terrorist organization” for organizations engaging in allegedly dangerous activities intended to “coerce” the public or influence government policy “by intimidation or coercion.” This kind of unfettered censorship strikes at the core of our democracy by threatening our right to free speech and protest.
Call or email FL Rep Kiyan Michael and urge her to vote NO on HB 1471. Tell her this bill violates our constitutional rights to free speech, free association, and due process. It will not make us safer. Ask her to focus on what really matters: lowering costs, raising wages, and making our communities safer, not making it harder for people to come together to demonstrate or protest.
ICE Eyes Detention Warehouse in Orlando
A 440,000 sq. ft. industrial facility in east Orlando is one of 23 warehouses nationwide being eyed by DHS and ICE for conversion into an immigration processing and detention facility as part of a massive expansion of detention capacity. The facility could be used to house up to 1,500 detainees. Local officials appear stymied in their efforts to stop the project, despite the success of other GOP-led states and communities in opposing similar facilities. We need to encourage them not to give up!
Urge Orlando Mayor (and DEM Gubernatorial candidate) Jerry Demings to pursue every available avenue to stop the ICE detention warehouse, including litigation. Warehouses are not appropriate for human confinement, and public dollars and local infrastructure should not be used to cage people or expand detention.
Find out more about how everyday people are fighting back against the Trump administration's plans for warehouse concentration camps across America by joining this mass call with Andrea Pitzer, sponsored by 50501 and moderated by Sarah Parker of Voice of Florida, on Thursday, March 5, at 7 pm.
A reminder that we are recruiting volunteer legal observers to implement the ACLU RAISE initiative locally! Please consider participating in this important project.

The Rapid Response Alliance for Immigrant Safety and Empowerment (RAISE) is a coalition formed by leaders in the human rights community, advocates, civil rights attorneys, and immigration law experts with decades of experience. The goal of this initiative is to ensure members of our community impacted by immigration enforcement and mass deportation are afforded all of their legal rights and due process, and are connected to mutual aid and other resources for themselves and their families.
Find out details and other ways you can help support the project here. Ready to volunteer? Training is not only offered to be a legal observer, it is required. If you're interested in that training, complete this form. Let us know if you have already completed the required online training, and we'll expedite your enrollment as a legal observer.
