Support Youth Activists & Teachers on Tuesday

We have an opportunity to support two critically important issues --- youth advocacy and the First Amendment rights of teachers --- at tomorrow's (Tuesday, October 7th) Duval

ree

County School Board meeting.  Members of the Wolfson High School Youth in Politics group will address the board on threatened cuts to school transportation funding during the public comments period at the meeting. The group shared their concerns about the impact of these cuts on access to magnet programs in public schools --- particularly for low-income and minority students --- at last month's BAM meeting. The impressive group of young advocates is seeking our support for their efforts!

Immediately before the meeting, BAM will join a coalition of organizations for a rally to support Hope

ree

McMath and other teachers whose First Amendment rights are under attack by the school board and administration. McMath's comments on Jax City Council member Rory Diamond's divisive budget amendments prompted the response.

The rally starts at 5 p.m. at the Duval County Schools Administration office, located at 1701 Prudential Drive. The school board meeting starts at 6 p.m. Find a copy of the agenda here.  Email us if you would like to carpool from the Beach. Can't attend but want to speak out on these issues? Find contact information for April Carney, who represents the Beach, and other school board members here.

& Sign-Making Party

ree

Whether you're planning to sign-wave, caravan, march, rally, or do it all on No Kings Day 2 October 18th, you need a sign!  Join us on Thursday, October 9th for a sign-making party --- we'll have everything you need to create an effective and eye-catching message!  We are moving the meeting this month to a different location --- Neptune House in Jarboe Park, Neptune Beach --- with more space and parking. The meeting is from 7 - 8:30 p.m.  Please bring poster board --- we'll have markers, artwork, suggested messages, and plenty of help!  We'll also have some tips for safely decorating your car and information on the Beaches No Kings Day 2 caravan!

Shutdown Showdown:

Hold the GOP Accountable!

The government shut down last week, thanks to the refusal of Donald Trump and the GOP to hold bipartisan discussions on extending Obamacare subsidies that 22 million people rely

ree

on for their healthcare coverage. We need to hold our two GOP Senators accountable for failing to address the needs of their constituents and shutting down the government!

Keep up the pressure on Rick Scott and Ashley Moody! Remind them that THEY own the shutdown. The GOP needs to quit playing politics and work with the DEMS to extend healthcare subsidies and other spending for needed services. Remind them that federal lay-offs will hurt Floridians. Call them TODAY (202.224.3121) and demand they commit to a bipartisan funding process. Every call reflects 100-1000 angry constituents, according to congressional insiders! Here's a script you can adapt and use. Consider following up your call with an email (click on names) or send this letter crafted by the Coalition on Human Needs (CHN). Click here for info on the effects of the shutdown.

Volunteers Needed for No Kings Day 2!

ree

No Kings Day 2 on October 18th promises to be even bigger and better than the first national day of action in June! BAM is joining 50501 NEFL and more than 20 other groups in organizing a host of activities to demonstrate our opposition to the authoritarian assault on our democracy. We're planning caravans from throughout Jacksonville -- including the Beach -- that will converge at Friendship Fountain for a march to a gathering at the courthouse downtown. Mark your calendar now and plan to be a part of any or all of the planned events!

BAM needs volunteers! Step up your involvement and help us make No Kings Day 2 a success! Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Safety Marshals: Safety Marshals are needed to assist Peacekeepers who are responsible for maintaining order and the safety of event participants. Volunteer responsibilities include: making sure participants march safely from one location to another;  keeping an eye out for counter-protesters and alerting the Peacekeepers of any issues (not confronting or rebuking), and handing out water. Sign up with a friend! Safety Marshals work in pairs. We're holding a training on Thursday, October 9th at the Adele Grage Community Center in Atlantic Beach at 6:30 p.m. for volunteers so sign up NOW!

  • Caravan Helpers: We need help coordinating activities at the caravan assembly site from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on October 18th. This includes helping participants decorate their cars and passing out route information.

  • Table Volunteers at the Rally: Help set up and staff the BAM table at the courthouse rally from 3 - 5 p.m. on No Kings Day 2. Sign up for an hour or more!
