Tell Congress: No Funding for War

272 members of Congress --- 53 senators and 219 representatives, including Rep. Rutherford

and Sens. Scott and Moody --- chose complicity and more violence last week by rejecting a bipartisan war powers resolution to stop Trump’s illegal war on Iran — an unjustified war of choice that has killed over a thousand people, including six U.S. servicemembers.

This vote defies the anti-war majority of their constituents and is a failure of Congress to exert its constitutional authority over war and peace. But this is just the beginning. The Pentagon is expected in the coming week to request a reported $50 billion in emergency funding for the war.

“The Pentagon is already feasting on a trillion-dollar budget, replete with waste and fraud, at a time when Congress has voted under the tax and budget reconciliation bill to strip food assistance from four million Americans and health care coverage from more than 15 million Americans," noted Public Citizen co-president Robert Weissman. "A vote for a military supplemental appropriation is a vote to support, continue, and enable Trump’s illegal and unconstitutional war on Iran."  Act this week! We must continue to let our elected representatives know we oppose this illegal war.

  • Call Rep. John Rutherford, Sens. Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, and tell them you condemn their vote on the War Powers Resolution and demand they listen to their constituents. No supplemental funding for the war in Iran!  Reach them through the Capitol switchboard (202.224.3121).

  • Contact Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and urge them to show some leadership. A vote for supplemental funding negates the DEMs' votes for the War Powers Act. Period.

  • Follow up with this letter from Win Without War expressing outrage over their vote and demanding they reject any request for supplemental funding.

  • Join us next Saturday at 10 am at the Beaches Library as we protest against the war, and everything else Trump and his MAGA adherents are doing to destroy this country.

Last Tango in Tally -Bad Bills We Can Still Stop

The final week of this legislative session is before us but it's too soon to relax.  Thanks to our friends at NOW, we want to spotlight a few remaining terrible bills that deserve your attention:

  • HB 1471/SB 1632, Outlawing Activism: This has already passed the House and the Senate, but they voted on different versions, so it's going back to the House for another debate and vote. This gives us another opportunity to ask lawmakers to oppose this dangerous bill! It creates a vague, new designation of “domestic terrorist organization” for organizations engaging in allegedly dangerous activities intended to “coerce” the public or influence government policy “by intimidation or coercion.” This kind of unfettered censorship strikes at the core of our democracy. Learn more from Common Cause and call Kiyan Michael to urge her to vote NO!

  • HB 991/SB 1334, "Election Integrity" - aka New Barriers to Voting: This Florida version of the national SAVE Act has passed the House and will soon face its final vote in the Senate. It would remove thousands of US Citizens from the voter rolls and prevent eligible citizens from registering.  This link from Common Cause makes it easy to call your Senator & say NO.

  • HB 1001/SB 1134, Anti-Diversity in Local Governments: This passed the Senate and is temporarily postponed on the House floor, meaning this could make it to the Governor's desk SOON if we don't act. This bill could effectively ban local governments from a range of actions like hosting or supporting Pride events, offering LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings, and recognizing cultural events, violating our freedoms and costing our state and small businesses millions in revenue.
