Amendment 3: His Biggest Con of All
FL Governor Ron DeSantis may be term-limited, but he is all over the November ballot. Three of his foot soldiers—appointed by him to their current positions—face voters for the first time. U.S. Senator Ashley Moody, Attorney General James Uthmeier, and Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia were rewarded for their loyalty to the Governor for signature initiatives like Alligator Alcatraz, mid-decade redistricting, DOGE-like attacks on local governments, the diversion of $10 million in Medicaid funding to political groups fighting ballot measures, and much more. These are three that need to be thrown out.
But that's not all. Also on the November ballot is DeSantis's biggest con of all: Amendment 3, the measure to cut property taxes by increasing homestead exemptions over the next three years. If approved by 60% of voters, Amendment 3 would hamstring local governments that depend on this revenue source to fund critical community services, like libraries, parks, public hospitals, and emergency services. It would supercharge the shift in power from local governments to Tallahassee that has been a GOP priority in the DeSantis years.
DeSantis called a special legislative session last May in a rush to get the amendment on the ballot. The original ballot language for the measure had to be rewritten by AG Uthmeier after a judge rejected it as "inaccurate and misleading," with numerous factual errors. A growing list of opponents has characterized Amendment 3 as a "tax shift" rather than a savings that will result in higher rents, more expensive everyday purchases, costlier first homes, and higher commercial taxes for small businesses. The good news is that voters may be wary of Amendment 3, and even DeSantis has decided not to risk his political future to campaign for the measure. That said, given the rising prices and economic challenges many voters face, it may be hard to pass up a tax cut, even one with unintended consequences. It's up to us to help defeat this dangerous amendment by getting informed voters to the polls in November!
Spread the word. Make sure the voters you know have the information they need to make an informed decision about Amendment 3 and all the down-ballot races! Talk to family and friends and share resources like the BAM Election Guide. Sample ballots arrive in voters' mailboxes the first week of October.
Get Out the Vote. Voting early is the best option for most voters! Check your voting status, and find all the information you need to vote at the Duval Supervisor of Elections (SOE) website.
Help progressive candidates! Canvass, phone bank, text, postcard, and contribute to candidates who share your democratic values: Angie Nixon, Rachel Grage, David Jolly, Donna Westrich, to name a few here in Florida. Monthly SWIFT Call Features GOTV Panel,
U.S. Senate Candidate Angie Nixon
A panel of voting rights advocates will discuss voting in the November midterm election and getting out the vote at the monthly meeting of the Statewide Indivisible Florida Task Force (SWIFT) on Tuesday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m. U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon will also join the call as a special guest. Nixon was recently selected as a priority candidate by Indivisible.
We will discuss ways to message and promote registering to vote and making a plan to vote early. Indivisible is planning to host phone banks and other GOTV efforts to support Nixon's candidacy. Register here to join the call.

We still have about 500 left! BAM's preparing to do another round of postcards in October to get out the vote for the midterms. We'll be urging voters who don't usually cast a midterm ballot to channel their anger over corrupt leaders, rising gas and grocery prices, housing and insurance costs, attacks on voting rights, and tax breaks for the rich into a vote for change! The Neptune Beach Coalition is collecting food again next week at the Saturday morning protest at the Beaches Library for Hunger Action Month!
