The Boss - Action Alert May 26, 2025

A Deeply American Voice

None other than the Boss --- Bruce Springsteen ---lent his voicelast week to the growing grassroots movement opposing Trump and his anti-democracy agenda. While the GOP-led

Congress held late-night meetings to placate party holdouts and steamrolled opposition to pass a bill representing the largest transfer of wealth  --- from the poor to the rich --- in history, the Boss made it clear he was not sitting on the sidelines. In carefully crafted remarks from the concert stage, he lambasted the administration as "corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous."

He followed with a seven-point list of the worst abuses of Trump's presidency so far, echoing what "protesters and activists are saying at thousands of rallies across the country."  His final salvo:

“A majority of our elected representatives have failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government. They have no concern or idea for what it means to be deeply American.”

In sharing his vision of America, Springsteen issued a wake-up call to his vast following and clearly rattled Trump. And while very few of us have his influence, we all play a role in growing the movement. On June 14th, our willingness to participate and to engage family and friends in the No Kings! Duval Day of Defiance is crucial for demonstrating the breadth of opposition to Trump's actions and the complicity of our elected officials. Make plans now to join the Wake-Up! Protest at Beach & Hodges, the No Kings! Duval Rally at the Courthouse, and other events and activities throughout the day.  Active protests by only 3.5% of a population can make a difference! (Photo credit: Boston.com)

Final Vote Tuesday on Nomination of Elizabeth Andersen to the Jax Public Library Board

The nomination of Elizabeth Andersen to the Jax Library Board of Trustees goes before the City Council for a final decision tomorrow (Tuesday, May 27th), following a 5-3 thumbs down vote by the Rules Committee last week. The local GOP, supported by Moms for Liberty and other extremists, has mounted a personal attack on Andersen, decrying the nomination by Mayor Deegan. Three things you can do to support Andersen, a proven leader and well-qualified candidate:

Please take a minute to thank City Council members Matt Carlucci, Michael Boylan, and Rahman Johnson, co-sponsor of the bill, for speaking out and voting for Andersen's nomination as members of the Rules Committee. Council member Jimmy Peluso also attended the meeting to voice his support.

Big Beautiful Bill Heads to Senate

Beaches Congress member John Rutherford effusively acknowledged his support of the "Big, Beautiful Bill," passed by one vote in the U.S. House last week after all-night negotiations that made the measure even worse. Clearly, he had not read the bill or the nonpartisan analyses of its impact on programs like Medicaid and SNAP, and now, Medicare. The bill next heads to the Senate for a vote, and in order to avoid a 60-vote filibuster, it must pass without a single change. There are two ways we can stop this terrible budget bill: convince four senators to abstain or vote against it, or encourage members to modify its onerous provisions. If any changes are made to the bill, it must go back to the House for a vote, giving us another chance to stop it. Step up the pressure this week on Florida Senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody!  Reach them through the Capitol switchboard (202.224.3121) and email them using this form from Indivisible. And while you are reaching out, let Rep. Rutherford (202.225.2501 or 904.831.5205) know what you think of his YES vote on the "Big, Beautiful Bill."

Finally, remember most Americans are NOT paying close attention to what's going on in Washington these days. Help activate that 3.5%  by educating at least one friend or neighbor on this terrible bill. Find 2-3 compelling details here - and share them with someone you believe will be as angry as you are.
