Tuesday is Primary Election Day!
Tomorrow (Tuesday, August 20th) is Primary Election Day in Florida. In Duval, voters will also elect judges and school board members in four districts with Moms for Liberty- and DeSantis-endorsed candidates vying for seats. If you have not voted yet, VOTE tomorrow! And, if you have like-minded friends and family who have not voted, be sure they make it to the polls - especially those who live in areas outside the Beach where Duval School Board races are on the ballot. Early voting and Vote-by-Mail results at the end of Early Voting on Sunday show DEMS with a 3,300 lead in turnout but we know GOP voters swamp the polls on Election Day. The GOP invested heavily in school board races and turnout in those districts is critical to preventing Moms for Liberty-backed candidates from taking over the board.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must cast their ballots on Election Day at their assigned precincts. A reminder that polling sites have been reduced in both Neptune and Jacksonville Beach, so be sure to check on your precinct location if you go to the polls tomorrow. If you have not returned your Vote-by-Mail ballot, you must drop it off at the Supervisor of Elections Office (105 E. Monroe Street) by 7 p.m. Tuesday or better yet -- vote in person instead at your assigned precinct. Find out more about what you need to vote, including information on provisional ballots, here. To learn what's on the ballot at the Beach, and get information about races & candidates, check out BAM's Election Guide.
As the polls close, join the Beaches Democratic Club for a Primary Election Watch Party at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Neptune Beach Senior Center! Enjoy pizza while watching the results of the US Senate primary, the Duval County School Board races, and the judges' races. RSVP and bring a snack to share!
Riding the Wave! DNC Convention Starts Today
The DNC Convention kicks off today (Monday, August 19) with presidential nominee Kamala
Harris and her VP pick Tim Walz riding a tsunami of enthusiasm--- and positive news. Inflation continues to cool. In a North Carolina speech, Harris outlined clear economic plans that contrast starkly -- both in substance and style -- to those of her GOP opponent. The Biden-Harris administration successfully negotiated reduced prices for 10 drugs that will save Medicare recipients over $1.5 billion in out of pocket costs next year. A new poll shows Harris leading nationally and in key battleground states. And Florida is back in play! Adding to the momentum is the inability of GOP standard-bearers Trump and Vance to find their footing against an electrified DEM ticket. Savor the joy this convention week --- and get ready to work! Complacency is the only thing that stands in the way of victory in November. We have two and a half months to get out the vote and make sure we hand the GOP contender the title he fears the most: loser.

Local Advocacy: Frazier Place & Housing $$$
The Jacksonville City Council will start voting in committees this week on the legislation, filed by council member Jimmy Peluso, to rename Confederate Street (between Hubbard & Liberty Streets) in honor of Ben Frazier, Jr., the founder of the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville and a tireless community advocate for social, racial, and economic justice. A final vote by the Council is expected August 27. You can lend your support to the proposed ordinance by signing this petition to the City of Jacksonville and emailing all our City Council members, to support the ordinance.
And while you are at it, urge the City Council to restore $10 million in funding for an innovative affordable housing plan proposed by Mayor Donna Deegan. The Council's Finance Committee nixed funding for the project but members can advocate for its inclusion in the 2024-25 city budget. Email members and advocate for the restoration of the funding.
