MFL on the Ballot! -August 5, 2024

Join Us Thursday to Help GOTV &

Stop Moms for Liberty

Early voting starts Wednesday, August 7 in a critical School Board election that features a slate of Moms for Liberty- and DeSantis-endorsed candidates who, if elected, would form a majority of board members. Voting sites will open two days later than planned due to weather concerns.  Moms for Liberty, leaders in the conservative "parental rights movement," have championed local book bans, the elimination of support programs for LGBTQ students, and curbs on sex education. The nominally nonpartisan election has been anything but in hotly contested seats. While we don't have a race on our ballot at the Beach, the school board makes decisions that affect all of us and our schools, including school closures. Join us for the BAM meeting on Thursday, August 8 at 7 p.m. at Adele Grage Community Center to hear what's at stake from public education advocates Katie Hathaway and Elizabeth Andersen. After they speak we'll be postcarding to support our partners Indivisible Mandarin in their efforts to GOTV for District 7 candidate Sarah Mannion, a strong proponent of public education. Help us send 1000 postcards to voters who can't be reached through other outreach! Postcards, labels, and stamps provided. Let's get this done! RSVP for the meeting here.

Other ways you can help GOTV in the school board election:

  • This Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. join Public School Defenders and Families for Strong Public Schools for a press conference and rally to encourage voter turnout for the August school board elections. Partners supporting the effort include BAM, League of Women Voters, Indivisible Mandarin, Moms Rising, and Northside Coalition of Jacksonville. Make a sign (no candidate names please) and join us as we help to get out the vote for school board elections! RSVP here.

  • Chip in and help the Duval DEMS put up five billboards supporting candidates facing Moms for Liberty & DeSantis-endorsed opponents. They just need $2,500 more to do it!

  • The Florida Democratic Party is sponsoring a phone bank for School Board candidates in key races on Thursdays and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. Volunteers will be able to pick the candidate they are phoning folks to support: Sarah Mannion (District 7), Hank Rogers (District 5) and Nadine Ebri (District 1). Register here to join.

  • Wave signs! Local public education advocates need sign wavers to support these candidates at early voting sites in their districts. Sign up here.

Sign the Petition: Support Renaming of Confederate Street to Honor Ben Frazier

Jacksonville City Council Member Jimmy Peluso last week introduced an ordinance to honor distinguished journalist and civil rights leader Ben Frazier, Jr. by renaming Confederate Street (between Hubbard and Liberty Streets) “Frazier Place.” Frazier, who died in 2023, was the founder of the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville and a tireless advocate for social, racial, and economic justice. He was a good friend of BAM's. The gesture is a fitting tribute to his efforts to remove Confederate statues in the city. You can lend your support to the proposed ordinance by signing this petition to the City of Jacksonville and urging Rory Diamond, our representative on the city council, to support the ordinance.

Ride the Wave! Volunteer This Week

Kamala Harris is the Democratic nominee for president! We are experiencing a phenomenal wave of enthusiasm and excitement - helped in no small part by the MAGA GOP nominee and his running mate. Help keep the momentum going by signing up for voter outreach this week!

  • Canvass at the Beach: We had a great time partnering with the Beaches Democratic Club last Saturday to canvass DEMS at the Beach. There's a lot of enthusiasm out there for Harris! We met this awesome young voter who couldn't wait to share the t-shirt she wore when she was only 8 years old. Definitely excited about Harris! We'll be canvassing again on Saturday, August 10 at 9:30 a.m. Sign up and join us!

  • Phonebank with Florida for Harris! 2024 FL Victory is hosting three phone banks each week to support Kamala Harris: Mellow Monday from 4:30 - 8 p.m., Thirsty Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m., and Family Night Friday from 5 - 8 p.m. Phonebanks are held at the Harris campaign headquarters on Beach Boulevard. Click on the event of your choice to register!

  • Over the Fence: Sign-up for Neighbor 2 Neighbor and talk to 10 like-minded people who live near you! Contact Nancy Staats if you have questions. N2N, a proven tactic for increasing voter turnout, is getting rave reviews from BAM members who have signed up!

  • VOTE: If you are voting by mail or voting early and need help figuring out who to vote for check out the BAM Election Guide.

And For A Little Fun!

DemCast, a digital advocacy group, is calling on cat ladies, dog ladies and pet lovers across the country to post videos, GIFs, and memes celebrating Kamala Harris and piling on JD Vance for his now-infamous comments about childless women every weekend using the #Caturday hashtag.  Check out their social media toolkit here.
