Action Alert - MLK Day, Inaugural Week!

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 18 - Celebrate the Life & Vision of Martin Luther King, Jr

If you are not one of the BAM members taking part in today's march to honor Martin Luther King, consider other ways to mark the day in his honor. As the New York Times put it, "in a moment of national racial reckoning, the holiday offers a timely opportunity to help it onward, through action and contemplation."

  • Use today to consider and renew your own commitment to racial reconciliation.

  • Consider other ways to donate & serve the community.

  • Write Lenny Curry to let him know you appreciate his plan to "right some of the wrongs"of consolidation like all the infrastructure missing from many minority neighborhoods. Let him know we look forward to swift action.

Tuesday, January 19 - Beaches Democratic Club - 2020 Local Election Recap

If you missed BAM's December meeting, this week the Beaches Democratic Club will offer a similar overview of the November election and voting patterns at the Beaches. The BDC meeting will also honor local candidates Donna Deegan, Joshua Hicks, Jimmy Midyette and Ashantae Green for running. Meeting will be held via Zoom from 7-8 p.m. Click here to RSVP.

Drain the Traitors!

Since the January 6 attack by insurgents on the U.S. Capitol, American Express, Blue Cross, Hallmark, Nike have announced they will permanently withhold campaign contributions from the Republicans who supported that day's challenge to the nation's electoral system. A larger group of companies including Amazon, AT&T, Coca-Cola, GE, Marriott, Mastercard & Visa, Walgreens, and Walmart) have announced at least temporary funding halts to these Senators & Congresspeople. The national Progressive Change Campaign Committee has created a webpage that makes it easy to see where our biggest corporations stand - and easy to tweet or phone them. Publix is among the many companies yet to take a stand. Let them know what you think. And share this link with friends. One sure way to reach politicians is through their wallets.

Wednesday, January 20 - America's Fresh Start

The day we've all been waiting for arrives this week. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be inaugurated to lead this country into what we all hope will be a saner, smarter, more inclusive future. Covid makes it impossible for us to gather as a group to watch & celebrate this moment we worked so hard for. But we can virtually gather at least on Facebook. On Wednesday, please take the time to post your hopes & good wishes on our Facebook page. And plan to attend BAM's February 11 meeting on Zoom when we'll be talking together about the issues and actions we want to focus on in 2021.
