What More Will It Take? Stop ICE Now

In the wake of the approval of additional ICE funding by the U.S. House --- aided by the votes of the seven cowardly Democrats who joined nearly all of the GOP reps--- we witnessed yet another senseless killing of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in Minneapolis. We saw photos of a five-year-old boy being carted off with his father to a detention facility across the country. We viewed an occupied American city. We heard the President and top law enforcement officials scoff at the need for any federal investigations. Surely it is past time for the Senate to draw the line supporting an agency that has morphed into a domestic military operation with no guardrails? There are indications that the compromisers in the Senate are growing a spine, promising (finally!) to block funding that includes the Department of Homeland Security --- and so imperiling the vote on the House budget compromise next week. And while it's easy to get into the weeds about what this vote means or its impact, Dan Pfeiffer's argument persuades us: "This is a moment that calls for moral leadership. You can’t call ICE fascists who are murdering Americans one day and then vote to fund them the next." Lend your voice to the opposition this week:
Hold FL Senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody accountable. Despite the likelihood they will vote with the rest of the GOP syncophants, they need to know this is not OK with us. Reach them through the Capitol switchboard (202.224.3121) and follow up with this Indivisible email. Extra credit: Tell Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer his leadership on this issue is overdue but welcome!
While we are holding people accountable, take a minute to shame Congressman John Rutherford for his vote supporting ICE funding. Call his office (202.225.2501) and follow up with an email today.
Send this message to Congress demanding an investigation into all ICE-related deaths.
Sign up for BAM's Immigrant Action Group. We'll alert you to local advocacy opportunities as we watchdog local law enforcement's collaboration agreements with ICE in our community. Citizen pressure delayed action on such an agreement in Atlantic Beach. We need to keep pushing.
Email us if you are interested in getting more information about local efforts to organize legal observers to monitor immigration enforcement activities through the ACLU RAISE initiative.
Attend a protest, rally, or vigil. Multiple events are popping up throughout the city in
response to ICE actions in Minneapolis, including the weekly protest every Saturday at
10 a.m. at the Beaches Library, and the emergency rally organized by the Jacksonville Immigrant Rights Coalition (JIRA) on Tuesday, January 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the Federal Courthouse, 300 N. Hogan Street. You can also place an LED candle in your window in memory of those who lost their lives in Minneapolis.
Support the people of Minneapolis! Here's a list of suggested groups that are working to support families and residents impacted by ICE activities in the city.

SWIFT Call This Week: Protecting the Vote

Join Indivisible groups like BAM from across Florida for the monthly Statewide Indivisible Florida Task Force (SWIFT) collaboration call on Tuesday, January 27, at 5:30 pm. The topic is Protecting the Vote! The call will feature two special guests, Jessica Lowe-Minor, President of the Florida League of Women Voters, and Mitch Emerson from No Partisan Maps.
The Governor has called a special session on redistricting for late April. Hearings are being scheduled during the current session by the House Select Committee on Redistricting. Speakers will share the current state of the GOP's efforts to further gerrymander Florida and tell us all how we can help right now in our own backyards. In addition, we'll hear about efforts to further suppress voting in Florida by creating significant obstacles to voter registration in the state. RSVP here to join the call.
