Time for Thanks on Lot J!
Thanks to every BAM member who wrote or called City Council - and urged friends and family to do the same. And thanks to the strong reporting by the Times Union, and groups like OurJax, the local NAACP, Mandarin Indivisible and a host of other organizations and individuals who raised questions about the process that created this deal - and its substance. Most of all, thanks to the 7 courageous members of City Council who voted the current proposal down: Danny Becton, Matt Carlucci, Randy DeFoor, Garrett Dennis, Al Ferraro, Tommy Hazouri, and Joyce Morgan. (See names & contact info in the yellow halos below.)
The proposal offered by Mr. Kahn and Mayor Curry would have committed an enormous amount of taxpayers’
money to establish a recreational and residential center near the sports arena at a projected cost in excess of $200 million dollars and potentially up to $400 million dollars. Both because of its cost, because those costs seemed unfairly weighted onto city taxpayers, and because the proposal bypassed both City Council and the Downtown Investment Authority and any public process weighing consideration of this money against other budgetary priorities, it was opposed by a majority of Jacksonville citizens. Thanks to everyone who took the time to speak out.
Now please take the time once again to express your thanks to the Council representatives who listened to our concerns, shared their own, and took a stand against this deeply flawed proposal.
